The City was preparing to pave the road to the Log House Landing along with installing a concrete ramp.
I convinced the City Council to pause and hold public listening sessions to hear what the people in Scandia actually wanted done with the Log House Landing.
The paving project was stopped. Now the Public Works Department maintains the site as a rustic, primitive launch.
I founded the Internet Focus Group, a grass-roots group of computer professionals, who collected and disseminated information about the state of internet in Scandia.
This work convinced the Council and the State to support internet expansion efforts in Scandia. In 2020, access to internet is being expanded by almost 240 homes. Funding opportunities for future expansions are being sought to ensure the remaining homes and businesses in Scandia have access to reliable, cost-effective, high speed internet.
A homeowner was experiencing issues with continual flooding of his home caused by a new home built next door.
I worked with the neighbors and the City to implement changes to divert water runoff to a holding pond. I also convinced the City to initiate a comprehensive stormwater management study of the area that pointed out several other issues. Today, we are working with the Watershed to identify solutions and apply for grants to address stormwater in this neighborhood.
The City wanted to start letting residents use the Wi-Fi at the Community Center. I conducted a security audit of the City''s computer network and made recommendations to address the vulnerabilities I discovered.
My recommendations were implemented by a local contractor, and the City is now allowing people to access reliable internet on the City’s guest network, and City staff work more efficiently on their newly secured private network.
Residents living on some of our gravel roads raised concerns that the dust control used by the City was sticking to their cars, causing issues in their driveways, and several residents asked us to stop using it.
I worked with the Public Works staff, who came up with the idea of using 50% less of the dust control chemical and then to reapply only if needed. It turned out that the 50% mix was just as effective as the full strength one and does not result in the damage residents were concerned about.
Scandia was experiencing an unexpected proliferation of solar farms in the area and many residents were complaining about them.
I made a motion to repeal our solar farm ordinance. The Solar Farm ordinance was reviewed, modified, and re-enacted. Only one new solar farm has been built since and no further applications or complaints have been received.
